OVERVIEW

The mission of the Orthopaedic Foundation is to promote research and education in orthopaedics, sports medicine and musculoskeletal diseases, therefore, the Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Internship program is at the heart of our programs we offer. The Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Clinical Research Internship program provides exposure to clinical and cadaveric research in medicine as well as exposure to clinical orthopaedics predominantly in a sports medicine setting. Interns engage in a research project under a senior physician (MD) and a clinical researcher (PhD) and are guided through the clinical research process from design to submission to a peer review journal. In addition, Interns participate in weekly journal clubs and Orthopaedic Knowledge Updates in accordance with the ACGME Sports Medicine Curriculum for Sports Medicine Fellows to enhance their knowledge in orthopaedics and musculoskeletal medicine.

OBJECTIVES

To familiarize medical students in research process from concept inception, design of materials and methods, and execution of data acquisition process.

To acquire skills in developing clinical or cadaveric research projects, analyzing data, and writing up and presenting results in meetings including data summarization and statistical analysis.

To familiarize medical students with objective measures to assess clinical outcomes in orthopaedics.

To enhance knowledge and skills in critical appraisal of the literature to assist in developing a research plan, interpretation of data, and integration into clinical practice.
